Doloto - Download Time Optimizer for Web 2.0 apps

Quote

Doloto
Doloto is an AJAX application optimization tool, especially useful for large and complex Web 2.0 applications that contain a lot of code, such as Bing Maps, Hotmail, etc. Doloto analyzes AJAX application workloads and automatically performs code splitting of existing large Web 2.0 applications. After being processed by Doloto, an application will initially transfer only the portion of code necessary for application initialization.

The rest of the application’s code is replaced by short stubs—their actual function code is transferred lazily in the background or, at the latest, on-demand on first execution. Since code download is interleaved with application execution, users can start interacting with the Web application much sooner, without waiting for the code that implements extra, unused features.

In our experiments across a number of AJAX applications and network conditions, Doloto reduced the amount of initial downloaded JavaScript code by over 40%, or hundreds of kilobytes resulting in startup often faster by 30-40%, depending on network conditions.

Google Talk is weird

  • the web client cannot ‘Call’ a desktop client
  • the web client cannot send or receive files
  • the desktop client cannot send or receive files with another Jabber client even if the Jabber client is signed into Google Talk

BITSAdmin - nifty downloading tool

BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) is a built-in Windows Service that transfer files using idle bandwidth, thereby causing minimal disruption to your normal tasks. Windows Update is the main user of this feature.

Users have not been able to use this Service to download other files because there was no user interface to do so. BITSAdmin, which ships with Vista and is available as a download for Windows XP is a command-line tool that lets you use BITS to download files from any location.

More details in this blog post.

Remember me

Windows Live Messenger (and all Windows Live SignIn screens) have a "Remember me" and "Remember my password" option. This is a really useful feature - I don't want to be signed in automatically, but I don't want to enter my username all the time.

So I select the "Remember me" option, but keep the "Remember my password" option unchecked.

Wish other websites would implement something similar.

Computer alert for drowning girl

A 10-year-old girl has been saved from drowning by a computer system designed to raise the alarm when swimmers get into difficulties. The girl, from Rochdale, was at the deep end of the pool in Bangor, north Wales, when she sank to the bottom.

The £65,000 system, called Poseidon, detected her on the pool floor and sounded the alarm. A lifeguard pulled her out and she recovered in hospital.

It is thought to be the first such rescue in the UK.

Next step: Robotic lifeguards. Sorry, Baywatch fans.

Google Talk - first impressions

Google released its IM client today - Google Talk.

The installer is a tiny 900 kb - it figures...the IM client is quite spartan (typical Google style).

You can use your GMail id to login. The IM client rides on the XMPP protocol that Jabber uses - so any Jabber client can talk to this service. Google also plans to support SIP at a later date.

The IM client also replaces the GMail Notifier - it includes a built in mail notifier. It also supports voice conversations between Google Talk users.

No rich text or emoticons support yet. Or video. Or file transfer. Guess Google has a lot of catching up to do with MSN and Yahoo!. Wonder what took them so long to get started.

Incidentally, MSN released a new version of its messenger today. This has some cool new features - check it out. I'll stick with MSN for now.
